Lanyu

Lanyu is a rocky, volcanic island with a tropical climate with most of the inhabitants being Yami aborigines, who speak their own dialect, build houses underground to avoid typhoons, and subsist on taro and sweet potato, and fish. The island of Lanyu has beautiful coastal scenery.

Maolin

Maolin is known for the natural beauty of its surrounding mountains. Most tourists here camp out. The village of Tona lies close by. The excellent craftsmanship of stonecraft of the people here is legendary. The Tona Hot Springs are one of the few untouched hot springs in Taiwan and lie near by. It is the only place on the archipelago with hotels.

Most of Taiwan is mountainous, and hiking is the most popular adventure activity. The weather in
Taiwan's mountains is rather unpredictable. Grass Skiing is another activity that is growing more and more popular in Taiwan.

If you can visit Taiwan during any of its colorful festivals, it will be a truly amazing experience.

The Chinese or Lunar New Year is the longest and most important festival in Taiwan and is celebrated in February. Shopping, cleaning homes, enjoying family feasts, offering sacrifices to the gods, and giving friends and relatives "red envelopes" (ang pau) containing "lucky money" are the usual ways of celebrating.

Firecrackers are burst throughout the night. The Lantern Festival, again celebrated in February came about when the people of ancient China first believed that celestial spirits could be seen flying about in the light of the first full moon of the new lunar year.

Their search using torches evolved into the current celebrations of colorful lanterns at temples and parks.

The Dragon Boat Festival in June brings festive boat races in Taipei, Lukang, Taiwan and Kaohsiung, with teams participating from all over the world.

The Ghost Festival is celebrated in August when they are believed to come to earth and lavish sacrifices and feasts are organized, paper money is burned, and Taiwanese operas are performed to ensure that they have a good time!.

Autumn Moon Festival in September is celebrated when the moon is at its fullest. With a ripe, round moon considered a symbol of happiness, the national holiday is a time for family reunions.
