of Switzerland reveals that Switzerland is a small country
of central Europe. It shares its boundary with Germany
in north, Austria and Liechtenstein in the east, Italy
in the south and France in the west. In other words
a meeting point of three different cultures- German,
France and Italian.
No country in Europe is more interesting than Swiss
land. In the ancient times, a Celtic Tribe called Helvetia
inhabited Switzerland. In A.D.1032 it became a part
of Roman Empire but was soon captured by mighty German
Habsburg Empire. It was only after the death of Habsburg
ruler Rudolf I in A.D.1291 that led to the foundation
of first Swiss Confederation.
Switzerland was declared as a neutral state in 1648
according to the Treaty of Westphalia and was given
its permanent neutrality only in 1815.In 1848 it was
declared as a federal state and adopts a federal constitution
also. But amend it in 1874,leaving all matters to the
responsibility of cantonal governments.
History of Switzerland is eyewitness to the world wars
though it remains neutral in both wars. After 1945,Switzerland
mainly engaged itself in the development programs. In
1963, Switzerland became a member of Council of Europe.
Women were granted right to vote in 1971.Berne is the
capital of Switzerland currently. However, in 1979,
parts of Berne attained independence and formed the
new canton of Zura.
Presently, Switzerland has some international organizations
along with some famous banks. Swiss History is full
of excitement and adventure like its culture and destinations.
A cluster of 26 beautiful cantons, this country is not
a member of EU, but is covered by EU territory all over.
