Zoo covers 40 hectares of dense forest and is the home
to over 132 species, 25% of which are scarce. The stars
of the show take in giant flying squirrels, tapirs,
giraffes and tigers, all in naturalistic habitats.
A so-called "open concept" has been in work
throughout the zoo, creating the false impression that
the animals are wandering freely through the park. In
fact, wet and dry moats are ingeniously hidden away
to separate man from beast. Anyone with a nervous temperament
will be pleased to know that some of the more nimble
animals are housed in magnificently landscaped glass-fronted
enclosures.
Contiguous to the Day Zoo is the Night Safari, the
world's first wildlife occurrence built to be viewed
after dark. Here visitors can wander along illuminated
walking trails or take a tram ride through the jungle
to spot tigers, rhino and sloth.
The conception of the Singapore Zoo dates from 1969.
On June, 23, 1973, the Singapore Zoo opened its gates
for the first time with a collection of 270 animals
from over 72 species and a staff of 130. By 1990, 1,600
animals from more than 160 species lived in social groups,
housed in 65 landscaped exhibits with boundaries conceived
to look as natural as possible.
