St. John's Island is located approximately 6.5 km to the south of the main island of Singapore . It was a former quarantine station for leprosy cases and a penal settlement for political prisoners and ringleaders of secret societies. But in recent times the western end of the island hosts a $30 million Marine Aquaculture Centre. This large hilly island also has swimming lagoons, beaches, picnic grounds, trekking routes and soccer fields.
St. John's natural shores are ringed by coral reefs with a variety of hard and soft corals. Commonly encountered animals contain an unusually large number of land hermit crabs, and many more sea cucumbers than elsewhere in the Southern Shores. St. John's Island also has small patches of mangroves, which shelters a rare variety of mangrove tree.
Holiday-makers yearning for an island stay on Saint John's Island can book the Holiday Bungalow, which can accommodate up to 10 persons and comes furnished with a kitchen. Organized groups can stay over in the dormitories at the Holiday Camps which can take up to 60 persons. The dormitories are equipped with basic cooking facilities. Overnight stays are only allowed for occupants at the Holiday Bungalow and Holiday Camps.
It is very convenient to reach St. John's Island. A daily ferry service leaves the Sentosa Ferry Terminal for Kusu Island and St. John's Island.
