| The
Philippines is made out of 7107 islands and lots of
coral reefs. Therefore it is a heaven of snorkeling
opportunities. There are 34,000 sq km of coral reefs,
some of which have grown since the Ice Age; over 100
reef slopes; over 800 classes of corals; over a thousand
species of marine life; over 400 fish species and over
500 fish families; and the most populous and diverse
aquatic ecosystem to be found.
In Baler alone, there are at least five good snorkeling
spots, although some may have been spoiled due to illegal
dynamite fishing. Snorkeling points are profuse in the
southern portion of Baler. These reef areas are in the
neighborhood of the Aniao Islets, Cemento Beach, Digisit
Beach, Dimadimalangat Islet, and the Lukso-Lukso Islets.
One of the more striking areas to snorkel is in Dicasalarin
Bay, which is 45 minutes by boat south of Sabang Beach,
Baler. The nearby reef shores to the right and left
of the bay stay unharmed by dynamite fishing. Various
multi-colored corals and undersea life are spread along
the shore reef wall, which is concave, due to the hammering
of the waves. Snorkeling is best during the period from
March until June, when the waves are smallest.
