| Located
in southern Mauritius, La Vanille Crocodile Park was
established in 1985. It is situated on the valley of
an old vanilla farm. The area is quite comparable to
a tropical rain forest with the palms trees, freshwater
brooks and a collection of local flowers and plants.
La Vanille Crocodile Park is the creation of an Australian
zoologist called Owen Griffiths and his Mauritian wife
who felt the place would be ideal for breeding Nile
crocodiles. Four female crocodiles and one male crocodile
were brought to the island from Madagascar and their
young were kept in temperature controlled indoor nurseries
for a year before they were released into water.
The crocodiles at the La Vanille Crocodile Park are
kept in protected areas. They are separated by age.
Apart from crocodiles, monkeys, deer, giant tortoises,
tenrecs, rabbits, bats, wild pigs and a giant Telfair
Skink are also found in La Vanille Crocodile Park, making
it a very popular tourist destination. The park also
has a presentation centre containing samples of Mascarene
reptiles with explanatory notes for each.
