| Malacca
is located on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia
which is about 14 kms from the south of Kuala Lumpur.
It is a place hailed by historians in order to trace
Malaysia's rich historical tradition. Malacca is divided
into three main districts, Central Malacca, Alor Gajah
and Jasin.
Malacca is famous for its rich historical tradition.
It was founded by an exiled prince from Sumatra, Parameswara,
in 1400.
Later on in the 18 th century, Malacca was
given to the British and the French and finally after
the World War II it was given independence under the
Malaysian prime minister.
There are several tourist attractions in Malacca. The
Stadthuys was built in 1650 as the official residence
of Dutch Governors and their officers and is a fine
example of Dutch architecture.
It has been preserved
in its original structure and form and now it houses
the Historical and Ethnography Museum.
Everyday it displays
the fine traditional bridal costumes and relics from
Malacca's glorious past. Porta de Santiago was built
by the Portuguese in 1511 and as a fortress it sustained
severe structural damage during the Dutch invasion.
The Christ Church , built in 1753 is a wonderful architectural
evidence of the Dutch. Dutch Graveyard is a warm memorial
devoted to excellent British officers and soldiers who
died in Nanning War (1831-32). St. Peter's Church is
the oldest Christian church in Malaysia.
The main feature
is a life-size alabaster statue of the Dead Lord before
the Resurrection.
The church was built in 1710 by the
Portuguese and the interior reflects a unique blend
of Eastern and Western architecture.
Sri Poyyatha Vinagar
Moorthi Temple is one of the first Hindu temples built
in the country at the turn of the century. It was built
on the plot given by the Dutch.
Kampong Kling Mosque
is one of the oldest mosques in the country with Sumatran
architectural features.
Hang Kasturi's Mausoleum is
another famous tourist spot. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in the country.
