does not experience a huge inrush of tourists possibly
because of the fact that the options of getting to Laos
are pretty limited. There are no direct routes to get
to Laos if you are traveling from Europe, North America
or Australasia.
Aerial route – The most efficacious
option of getting to Laos is to fly. You won't be able
to get any direct flights from Europe, North America
and Australasia, but you can always do break journey.
The most common aerial route is to come to Bangkok and
Thailand and then board another flight that will take
you to Vientiane or Luang Prabang. You can avail the
services of Lao Aviation, Thai Airways International,
Vietnam Airline, Southern China Airline, Silk Air and
Malaysian Airline. You can also board regular flights
to Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Chiang Mai,
Kumming, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Vientiane is the
international airport that is at a distance of 3 miles
from the city.
Rail – Laos is not connected by railways
but planning is in the process to extend the Bangkok-Nong
Khai railway.
River – If you wish to travel to
Laos, you have to take a ferry from Chiang Khong. You
have to procure your departure stamp from Thailand,
from the customs window. The ferries operate quite frequently.
Once you get to the Laos side you can get your visa.
Road – You can cross the Thailand-
Laos border at Houeixay in Bokeo province. If you are
traveling from China, you can reach Laos by road at
Boten in Luang Namtha province. The Thai and the Vietnam
borders are linked with a well paved highway. You can
cross the borders of Laos and Vietnam at Lak Sao and
Dan Savanh. Only a couple of main roads are safe for
all-weather driving.
