| Savannakhet
was established in 1642 by Lao Prince ‘Theo Keosimphali'.
Savannakhet is flanked by the Mekong River and offers
gorgeous scenic locations. It is the second largest
city and the most populated city in Laos. Savannakhet
boasts a number of French colonial and Franco-Chinese
buildings like many cities in Laos. Some of the interesting
places in Savannakhet are Sayaphoum temple, ThatInghang
stupa, ThatPhon stupa. The most natural and spectacular
places to visit are Ban Kengkok and HouanHin which houses
the ancient Khmer ruin of a stone house.
Most of the town's planning is French colonial, including
a huge Catholic church, although there are a number
of Buddhist temple buildings worth viewing, such as
Wat Sainyaphum. You can walk the Ho Chi Minh Trail,
a former secret route used by the North Vietnamese Army
to transport military gear to South Vietnam. The trail
was bombed by the USA during the Vietnam War and parts
of this destruction can still be seen. However, the
trail should be seen with a guide as large
parts of the route still contain unexploded bombs.
