| The
capital of Xieng Khouang is Phonsavan. Situated at an
altitude of 1,200m is an excellent climate. It has one
main attraction - Thong Hay Hin - the 'Plain of Jars',
a huge plateau, 10 km south east of the city, where
many mysterious huge bottled shaped stone pots were
discovered. However most travelers were disappointed
and thought the plain of the Jars cannot be justified
with the hard journey they had experienced.
Apart from the Plain of Jars, there are a few nice local
markets, hot springs and poppy fields in November.
The most practical access to the town is by air. The
overland journey is very hard. From Vientiane or Luang
Prabang one can go to Pokune on the route 13, and then
take very bad road to Phonsavan for 6-14 hours.
