Tours to Phonsavan
The capital of Xieng Khouang is Phonsavan. Situated at an altitude of 1,200m is an excellent climate. It has one main attraction - Thong Hay Hin - the 'Plain of Jars', a huge plateau, 10 km south east of the city, where many mysterious huge bottled shaped stone pots were discovered.
However most travelers were disappointed and thought the plain of the Jars cannot be justified with the hard journey they had experienced.
Apart from the Plain of Jars, there are a few nice local markets, hot springs and poppy fields in November.
The most practical access to the town is by air.
A sizable Hmong market (open tam Sun) is held about 30km east of Phonsavan on the way to
Muang
Kham.
Between Muang Kham and Nong Haet it's not unusual to see small poppy fields - which typically bloom in January - along the side of the road next to Hmong villages.
You may also see Thai Dam funerary shrines on this journey - large white tombs with prayer flags, offerings of food and a pile of the departed worldly possessions.
Muang Kham is little more than a rustic highway trading post, but there are several jar sites in the vicinity (see the previous Plain of Jars section).
A simple eatery called Nang Kham Pui next to the bus terminal area offers noodles and sticky rice.
About 56km from Phonsavan on the way to Nong Haet, the large Hmong village of Ban Na Sala lies on a hillside 2km off the road.
Farther east along Rte 7,120km from Phonsavan, is the market town of Nong Haet, which is only about 25km short of the Vietnamese border.

The overland journey is very hard. From Vientiane or Luang Prabang one can go to Pokune on the route 13, and then take very bad road to Phonsavan for 6-14 hours.
