Spanning
an area of 10,500 hectares, Monteverde Biological Reserve
is a tropical cloud forest. It is distinctively different
from the rainforests at the lower altitude. On the virtue
of being situated at a high altitude the forest remains
shrouded by the low lying clouds.
The plants growing in Monteverde Biological Reserve,
Costa Rica, derive their sustenance from the mist that
pervades the atmosphere. The trees that shoot up to
a monumental height are concealed by the overgrowth
of orchids, mosses, bromeliads and ferns.

The two lizard species must have arrived on rafts of vegetation. Both species have close relatives living in Central and South America. There is also at least one endemic species of freshwater fish, Cotylopus cocoensis.
