Lake Villarrica

Chile sightseeing is hardly complete without a visit to Lake Villarrica. Located about seven hundred kilometers south of Santiago, in the Lake District of Chile, Lake Villarrica is a sure stop for those visiting Pucon. The city of Pucon is situated on the eastern coast of Lake Villarrica and is a thriving tourist destination and a favorite ski resort.

The Lake District of Chile is one of the most beautiful parts of Chile. As is suggestive of the name, it abounds in a number of lakes that are fringed by snowcapped mountains. At Lake Villarrica, you will be provided with the opportunity to engage in a number of water sport activities that include sailing, kayaking, sport angling and water skiing.

These sports are more popular in summer as the water of the lake remains warm during that time. During winters, the average temperature of the water of Lake Villarrica drops down to 10 degree Celsius.

During the summer invasion of tourist, many locals leave the area and rent out there houses to tourist. With a little bit of planning and care, Villarrica is an excellent alternative to Pucón in the summers, with deep discounts in relation to the wild streets of Pucón.

All the nightlife of Pucón can still be had with a cheap bus ride or a “collectivo”. Never the less, for the entire area surrounding the lake, it is well worth the effort to make long term reservations if you plan to stay any length of time in the area around January or February.

Apart from the Villarrica Lake, the other major attractions of the place include Carburga, Calafquen Lakes, National Reserve Villarrica and the National Park Heurquehue.

The Villarrica Volcano located to the south of the lake feature among the ten most active volcanoes in the world.

Villarrica is starting to come into its own as a tourist destination. It has long been a destination with backpackers, and has the infrastructure that a backpacker would expect.

It was one of the few places in Chile that we would say there are real international hostels in the sense that you would find them in Europe or else where.

This is because more than a few backpackers and travelers made it to Villarrica and never made it any further.
