Chiloe Island Off
the coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean, Chiloe
Island is the main island of Chiloe Archipelago.
It is the second largest island in Chile after the Isla
Grande de Tierra del Fuego.
Chiloé is the second largest island in South America - after Tierra del Fuego - measuring 112 miles from north to south. The coastal mountains cross its entire length, creating two completely different environments: toward the Pacific, the coast receives constant damp winds from the ocean and heavy rainfalls, so there is abundant vegetation.
Facing the continent, the island's microclimate allows for human life with all its folklore and varied mythology its gastronomy - such as the typical curanto and all the necessary agricultural crops. With their maritime tradition, these people built most of their homes on
palafitos -pillars of wood that hold the house above the water - which are one of the island's emblems, together with its characteristic wool handicrafts.
Chiloe Island is quintessentially a charming island
where exuberance of nature and friendly people co-exist.
The coastal mountains, lush vegetation, and salubrious
weather offer exciting moments to live. Coinciding well
with nature's beauty, homes standing on the pillars
of wood known as palafitos, serve as emblem of nation.
Between the Chiloe Island and the continent, there
are numerous small islands in the inner sea. You can
reach to this group of islands either through boat or
kayak. In fact some islands are so closely situated
that you can walk down the distance. Apart from this,
being on this pristine island you can also reach main
urban centers of the province called Castro,
Ancud and Quellón . At these urban centers,
you are treated with delicious and delectable specialty
cuisines.
Not only this, Chiloe Island in Chile
is also considered to be the starting point for tours
to the surrounding areas, adventure excursions, bicycle
tours, fishing trips, maritime crossings, observation
of the flora and fauna, etc.
To epitomize the entire view of Chiloe Island, it can
be said that this charming island is a home to Jesuit
churches, Stilt houses, Chiloe National Park, Chiloe
Archipelago and tasty food .
Chiloe's three main towns, the new capital Ancud is in the north, Castro, the former capital, on the east, and Quellón on the southern tip, offer most of the island's tourism amenities, but a visit to the smaller communities, particularly to visit the islands many churches, built first by the Jesuits and then the Franciscans, is worth your time. There are several hundred wooden churches, using pegs instead of nails, and many are listed by UNESCO as cultural heritage sites.
