Cockatoo in Australia Australia
and the neighboring islands is the home to this species
bird known as Cockatoo. Even though the name has Malay
origin from the word 'Kakatua' meaning elder sister,
the Cockatoo is mainly found in Australia with other
species of this bird found in Indonesia, New Guinea
and islands on the South Pacific Ocean.
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is similar in appearance to the three species of corella found in Australia. Corellas are smaller, however, and lack the prominent yellow crest.
In Australia Wildlife Sanctuary Cockatoo has many features common with the parrot
with a curved beak; it differs with the parrot also
in many ways. Most importantly the color of the body
differs. The Cockatoo is almost pristine white in color
and in most cases are larger than the parrots.
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are common and familiar in Australia. Their range extends throughout the northern and eastern mainland, and Tasmania. Their popularity as a cage bird has also increased this range, as these birds either escape or are released deliberately in areas where they do not already occur.
A small population has become established around Perth, Western Australia. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are found in a variety of timbered habitats and are common around human settlements. The birds stay in the same area all year round.
The Cockatoo
falls under the endangered or vulnerable species list,
so they are the privileged or the protected class amongst
their counterparts. The species of Cockatoo, which fall
under this category, are the Goffin's Cockatoo; Red-
vented Cockatoo, Moluccan Cockatoo, Yellow-crested Cockatoo
and the Palm Cockatoo.
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo's normal diet consists of berries, seeds, nuts and roots. It also takes handouts from humans. The species has become a pest around urban areas, where it uses its powerful bill to destroy timber decking and panelling on houses. Feeding normally takes place in small to large groups, with one or more members of the group watching for danger from a nearby perch.
Cockatoo is a very friendly creature if you can give
them the right food to eat and interact with them properly.
They are also very defensive creatures and that can
take the form of aggressive behavior towards the owner.
It's never considered wise to put a beautiful bird like
the Cockatoo in cages.
If you really want to enjoy the
presence of the Cockatoo in Australia Wildlife Sanctuary, then you can do so in the
open air of the Australian bush lands.
Cockatoo is a
very important part of the natural wildlife of Australia
and has been preserved for the last decades on account
of being one of the endangered species of bird.
