Los Glaciers National Park Los
Glaciers National park is located in the Santa
Cruz Province in Argentina. This park stretches from
the wind-blown steppe in the east to the Andes Mountains
in the west. Built in 1937, this park has been stated
by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1981. This is
the second largest in Argentina. The name of the park
connotes to the huge ice cap in the Andes range which
is infact, the biggest outside Antarctica. This huge
ice cap feeds nearly 47 glaciers which are the major
attraction in the park like Marconi, Viedma, Moyano,
Upsala, Onelli, Mayo, etc all lying in the Atlantic
Basin. Moreover there are 200 glaciers independent of
this ice field. Though these glaciers give a wrong notion
of immobility they are constantly moving resulting in
the ice in the front edge to break into huge balls.
These chunks finally fall into the water and float away
as icebergs.
More than 30% of the park is covered with ice. The
park's effort to harmonize with nature is unparallel
in the world. The main attraction of this park besides
the scenic beauty and wildlife is the Perito Moreno
Glacier which empties into Lake Argentino. You can have
picturesque views of the spectacular glaciers along
with jaunts to lakes and rivers, through forests and
over hills, as well as treks and boat trips along with.
You can also climb the Fitz Roy Mountain where you can
enjoy the extensive fauna and wildlife along with the
periled species such as pudu pudu, the southern river
otter and the pumas which are severely chased by local
cattle raisers. The forest comprises lenga, false beech,
other trees of the northfagus family and Cypress from
Guaitecas.
The park is the second largest in Argentina, extending some 170 km along the Chilean frontier and covering some 759,000 hectares. It was declared a World Heritage region by UNESCO in 1987. Some 40% of the park is covered by giant ice fields, with 47 major glaciers of which 13 flow east descending into the park to feed the two big lakes, Lake Viedma in the north and Lago Argentino in the south. There are also about 190 smaller glaciers that are not
connected to the ice fields.
Just east of the ice fields are areas of southern beech forest and further east still the Patagonia steppe with shrub vegetation. There are over a hundred species of birds inhabiting the forest and steppe.
The best time to visit the park is between October and March. While the visiting season is being extended each year by touristic demand, September still represents a sleepy opening and Easter seems to be the magical date for closing up.
A trip to this beautiful park can be taken all year
long.
To reach this park it is essential to go to the Intendencia
del parquet (Park Management), found in El Calafate,
which has opened up in the airport with links to the
rest of the country. The second way is from the north
through the Gallegos River. From there you can proceed
until El Calfate, a town located 50 km from the park.
From there you can easily arrive at the town of El Chalten
which is within the safeguarded area of the park.
So enjoy your visit to Los Glaciers National Park.
