Iguazu Falls
Iguazú Falls are located in Iguazú National Park and are waterfalls of the Iguazú River located on the border of the Brazilian state of Paraná and the Argentine province of Misiones. In Guarani language the term “Iguazú” means “great waters”.
This waterfall was discovered by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541. In 1984 and 1986 this park was designated as Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Legend has it that a god acted to marry a charming aborigine named Naipu, who ran away with her human lover in a canoe.
In fury, the god shredded the river giving birth to the waterfalls and dooming the lovers to an eternal fall. Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horsehoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazú Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth.
During the rainy season of November - March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic m) per second.
These matter of fact details do nothing to describe the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water (an average of 553 cubic feet per second) thundering down 269 feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to say Poor Niagara.
Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguazu Falls are divided by various islands into separate waterfalls
The waterfall arrangement comprises of about 270 falls along 2.7 kilometers' of the Iguazú River. Some of the individual falls are equal to 82 meters in height, though the majorities are about 210 feet.
But the Garganta del Diablo or Devil's Throat which marks the border between Argentina and Brazil is the most attractive of all.
You can visit the waterfalls either is a picturesque train or walk around trails. There are two basic circuits: an upper path and a lower path.
The lower path directs to the base of the falls, where the spray drizzles the visitors. Well thiswill not only be an adventure to you but a unique experience also. In this circuit you may hire a ferry to Isla San Martin.
But the panoramic view that you will have from the upper circuit will remain fresh in your mind throughout your life.
