Falls are located in Iguazú National Park and
are waterfalls of the Iguazú River located on
the border of the Brazilian state of Paraná and
the Argentine province of Misiones. In Guarani language
the term “Iguazú” means “great waters”. This
waterfall was discovered by Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca
in 1541. In 1984 and 1986 this park was designated as
Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Legend has it
that a god acted to marry a charming aborigine named
Naipu, who ran away with her human lover in a canoe.
In fury, the god shredded the river giving birth to
the waterfalls and dooming the lovers to an eternal
fall.
The waterfall arrangement comprises of about 270 falls
along 2.7 kilometers' of the Iguazú River. Some
of the individual falls are equal to 82 meters in height,
though the majorities are about 210 feet. But the Garganta
del Diablo or Devil's Throat which marks the border
between Argentina and Brazil is the most attractive
of all.
